As usual the 2015 Freewheelers For A Cure, Tour de Cure team, did not disappoint. On March 15th, twenty nine riders took to the roads around Lake Nona, St Cloud, Kissimmee and Davenport as the sun was just starting to come up.
They rode various distances from 25 miles to 101 miles to raise awareness and money to aid in the fight to cure diabetes. This year’s team raised $13,412, an increase of $1,056 over last year. The 2015 team exceeded the second place club team in the club/organization category by over $7,000. The 2015 team also placed 4 team members on the champions list, headed by none other than our club President Leslee Mitchell. Each of these 4 team members exceeded the $1,000 contribution level and seven additional team members exceeded the $500 level
The local chapter of The American Diabetes Association again did an outstanding job of catering to the riders. SAG support was top notch with stops about every 15 to 20 miles where riders were treated to all of the customary refueling goodies. Roving SAG support was covered by local bike shops and Bike Sag, and all were in communication via ham radio operators to make sure no one was left stranded on the road.
This year’s team was just fantastic to work with and I am sure most of them will be repeat members next year; to each of you I say thank you. I also need to thank Phil Mings for his usual fine job of guarding the Freewheeler tent at the venue and promoting the club while the rest of us got to ride. A special thank you goes to Leslee Mitchell for spending one of her Saturdays working the Orange Cycle garage sale where we raised $355 for the team from selling donated bike parts and donuts. This Tour de Cure event has to rate right at the top of the Freewheelers charity events.
